At last week’s L2 Forum, one of the highlights of the agenda was our conversation with Julie Bornstein, CMO and Chief Digital Officer at beauty e-tail giant Sephora. In their 20 minute talk, posted here in its entirety, L2 Founder Scott Galloway got Bornstein to speak candidly about everything from the Amazon threat (“I don’t think Amazon and luxury will mix”) and the role of creative in an e-commerce dominated world, to her team’s favorite social platform (spoiler: Pinterest) and the beauty brands whose marketing strategies she admires most right now. In the broader retail sector, C-level executives are predominantly letting younger employees take their company’s digital lead. Bornstein, as you’ll hear in the interview, is quite the opposite, spearheading Sephora’s top-notch online-integrated Beauty Insider loyalty program (which she created), as well as managing almost every aspect of Sephora’s digital and omnichannel shopping experiences in the U.S. As a bonus, she also happens to be gracious, humble, and genuinely enthusiastic about the work.
