It’s annoying when beautiful people are likable and smart, so get ready for an excruciating 6+ minutes of ageless ’90s super model Christy Turlington charming her way through an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Executive Editor Laura Brown. At Manhattan institution Indochine (“I came here when I was just a model…”), Turlington reminisces about her many Bazaar covers, her 25 year relationship with Calvin Klein, drinking Sambucca, and relying on on Naomi Campbell for rhythm.
To go along with her new spy-themed Vogue cover, Claire Danes and Homeland co-star Damian Lewis shoot a fun video Q&A on-set, discussing their favorite movies (“Citizen Kane”), favorite fictional characters (“Pinocchio”) and favorite designers (Narciso Rodriguez for her, Schiaparelli for him). A fairly serious and private actress, this is the most personal we’ve seen Danes, who’s no doubt been softened by motherhood. When asked what physical attribute was her favorite, she went the opposite direction of Lewis (“butt”), claiming that which she loved most was her infant son Cyrus’ chubby thighs.
Every now and again certain people get up in arms about how expensive fashion is. $2,500 dresses, $4,000 coats, $995 shoes–there’s just no justification, they’ll say. In a new short film, “Made in Italy,” commissioned by British shoe design house Charlotte Olympia (designed by Charlotte Dellal), director Tabitha Denholm takes her time explaining to us that fashion is a craft and an art and one that takes many many talented people to achieve. Seeing one of Charlotte’s shoes assembled form beginning to end, woven together with idyllic visuals of the Italian countryside and beautiful classical music, could turn any naysayer into a big fashion spender.
The next installment in Alexander Wang’s ‘Confessional’ series features one of the Balenciaga creative director’s favorite runway models, Malgosia Bela. Following the young mother from the streets of New York, captured as she spots Wang’s newest campaign billboard against the winter skyline, to backstage at the designer’s Fall RTW show, Kraków-born Bela talks candidly about becoming a model, what working with Wang has meant for her career, and how having her son is “probably the only thing [she’s] ever done right.”
It’s entirely in French, but a testament to how good this video interview with former Dior model Kouka is, is that for those non-French speakers among us, her words still keep us rapt in attention. Sharing memories and vintage photographs of her days walking, arms open wide, down a short parlor runway wearing some of Dior’s earliest Haute Couture creations, Kouka exudes that old school fashion class rarely found in today’s model ranks. And if that wasn’t enough to draw you in, her intricate bib necklace and perfect cat-eye liner seal the deal.
