Once upon a time, home delivery in five working days was considered quick. Fast-forward to today and evolving consumer expectations drives retailers to strive for lightning speed fulfillment. Realizing that fulfillment is a source of differentiation among brick-and-mortar retailers, brands on the UK high street are rising to the challenge.
Click and collect services mutually benefit both consumers and specialty retailers. Customers can forgo shipping costs and long check-out lines, while brands are rewarded with increased foot traffic, which often results in customers purchasing additional items in store.
That said, only 68% of brands tracked in Gartner L2’s Digital IQ Index: Specialty Retail UK support click and collect, and a third offer the service for free. While next-day click and collect is adopted by 19% of Index brands, only two offer same-day collection: Next and Schuh.
Next recently launched a one-hour click and collect service and ensures the offering is highlighted on every relevant product page. The high street retailer makes it easy for customers to collect their order through its store finder tool, which allows results to be filtered by where the items can be collected in one hour.
Schuh offers the same service, but takes it up a notch by allowing shoppers to reserve items online and collect them from one of its UK stores in as little as 20 minutes. This might be the closest to lightning speed that customers can get!
