After cementing his reputation as the pope of the digital age with a popular Twitter account, Pope Francis has turned his attention to Instagram. Tomorrow the Catholic leader will begin posting under his Latin name, Franciscus.
The images will be characterized by “tenderness, mercy and lots of joy,” said Vatican spokesman Greg Burke. He did not address whether the pontiff will also use popular hashtags such as #foodporn and #fitspo.
By joining Instagram, the Pope could broaden the platform’s appeal outside the U.S. Americans account for 88% of Instagram interactions, even though just a third of posts are made in the country, according to L2’s Intelligence Report: Social Platforms. However, the Pope’s popularity around the world could encourage interactions from countries where the platform has been slower to engage users.
