Based on analyst predictions the Apple Watch could sell over 30 million units this year, more than any other watch company. Yet, many Swiss watch executives have treated Apple’s new development as a fad with no impact on the industry.
Perhaps the watch companies will slip out of denial one at a time. Montblanc has made an e-strap compatible with its contemporary Time Walker pieces and a Bluetooth connection to iOS and Android phones. And this week TAG Heuer, Intel and Google announced a partnership to create a Swiss smartwatch combining technological innovation with the craftsmanship (and branding) of luxury watches.
As of now the smartwatch market is fragmented, leaving room for a player like Apple or a tech/fashion partnership.
