Amazon wants to become one of the country’s top five grocers by 2025, and buying Whole Foods is a crucial step in that direction. The acquisition gives Amazon entry to 239 incremental markets, in addition to expanding coverage of areas already served by the Fresh program.
This graphic indicates where Amazon warehouses and Whole Foods store locations overlap. In the US, 49% of Whole Foods stores are in markets already served by Amazon Fresh, including California, New York, and Washington, DC. However, Whole Foods is also located in 32 states where Amazon has not yet established a grocery presence – giving the e-tailer a major opening.
