Loser: Apple, which was ordered to pay a record $14 billion in back taxes to Ireland. This might be the beginning of governments holding the company accountable for the $200 billion in foreign profits it holds overseas.
Loser: Facebook, for its ham-handed attempt to circumvent ad-blocking software. Disguised as a noble effort to serve better ads, the effort failed to address the real issue, which is that most ads suck and no one wants them.
Winner: live streaming. Fewer people watched the Olympics this year, especially 18-34-year-olds. But when NBC handed over its Snapchat account to BuzzFeed, it garnered more than 2 billion views.
Winner: teamwork. As the media singles out individual Olympics medalists, the U.S. women’s coxed 8 rowing team demonstrates an equally valuable skill set.
