Yoox Group confirmed today that it is in talks to buy U.K.-based online retailer Net-a-Porter. Both brands had relatively high scores in L2’s 2015 Digital IQ Index: Department Stores, and displayed global competence where few brands have succeeded. (Yoox was ranked 16th and Average among 56 brands , while Net-a-Porter was Gifted and 13th.)

E-commerce is an opportunity for department stores to capitalize on their globally recognized iconic names, and 52% are targeting shoppers outside of their home markets. However, few department store are building regional and customized site services for international shoppers. Yoox is in the minority (38%) of Department Stores brands that enable site navigation in multiple languages, and automatically tailors FAQ page languages and customer service contacts to the user’s selected country.


Furthermore, Yoox was one of six Index brands (in addition to John Lewis, Intermix, Lane Crawford, Liberty, and Marks & Spencer) to offer free international shipping during the study period.


Net-a-Porter is a dominant force in international search, with the most visibility on Google across the U.S., U.K. and France.
